Prakash Raj, born Prakash Rai on 26 March 1965 in Bangalore, Karnataka, is a prolific Indian actor, director, producer, television presenter and politician renowned for his versatility across the South Indian film industries and Bollywood. A true polyglot, he fluently speaks Tulu, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, English and Marathi, which has enabled him to perform in over 300 films spanning Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and English languages. After completing his education at St. Joseph's College of Commerce, he began his artistic journey with street‑theatre performances and Kannada television serials, earning acclaim for his powerful dialogue delivery. His cinematic breakthrough came with K. Balachander’s Duet (1994), after which he adopted the screen surname “Raj”. Since then, he has amassed a remarkable collection of awards, including five National Film Awards—Best Supporting Actor for Iruvar (1997), a Special Mention for Antahpuram (1998), and Best Actor for Kanchivaram (2007)—as well as numerous state and Filmfare honors.

Beyond acting, Prakash Raj has made significant contributions as a filmmaker and producer, founding Duet Movies and delivering successful productions such as Puttakkana Highway (National Award for Best Feature Film in Kannada) and the multilingual hits Oggarane and Ulavacharu Biryani.
