Padayappa, Rajinikanth, is a skilled mechanical engineer who returns to his village to attend his sister Nandhini’s engagement to Suryaprakash, son of their respected maternal uncle Rajarathnam, Radha Ravi. While there, he encounters Vasundhara, Soundarya, Rajarathnam’s maid, and a quiet attraction begins to blossom. At the same time, Suryaprakash’s sister Neelambari, Ramya Krishnan, also falls for Padayappa, setting up a complicated love triangle that shakes the household. The elder Dharmalingam, the family patriarch, faces pressure from his younger brother Ramalingam, who demands a share of the property to gain wealth and respect, while Dharmalingam stands firm in his refusal.

The family leaves for Padayappa’s home in Madras, but tragedy strikes when Dharmalingam dies as they depart. In a bid to consolidate wealth and status, Suryaprakash secretly marries Ramalingam’s daughter Meena, a move that publicly humiliates Padayappa’s mother Savitri, Lakshmi, before she blesses the couple and departs. Soon after, Padayappa sets out to clear his land for agriculture, only to have Ramalingam’s spy uncover a hill of solid granite on the property, a discovery with tremendous value. Ramalingam pushes to reclaim the land by pressuring the family, but Savitri steps in to cancel the deal. When Ramalingam escalates his attempts to seize control, Padayappa fights back and leaves with his family, ultimately launching a granite-based business that makes him wealthy and allows him to reclaim the chieftain’s role his father once held. Nandhini marries Sivaraman, one of the chief engineers who works for Padayappa’s company, Rajesh Kumar as Sivaraman.

As the years pass, Neelambari learns of Padayappa’s love for Vasundhara and grows furious, while Rajarathnam’s acts of humiliation toward Savitri continue to haunt the family. In a dramatic turn, Rajarathnam ends up taking his own life the night of the wedding, and Savitri’s dignity remains intact as she blesses the couple and moves on. Neelambari, driven by revenge, tries twice to derail Padayappa, but the elder couple’s plans shift when Vasundhara becomes the target of Neelambari’s schemes. Padayappa ultimately marries Vasundhara, and Neelambari, driven to desperation, brings Suryaprakash into the household as home minister, while the memory of the past still lingers.

Eighteen years later, Neelambari lingers in her room, and Suryaprakash’s political power as home minister intensifies the family’s fortunes. Ramalingam’s finances falter, and his family faces eviction, but Padayappa steps in to help, earning forgiveness from Ramalingam. Neelambari’s vendetta grows more personal as she engineers a scheme wherein Chandraprakash alias Chandru, Rajesh Kumar, a student at Padayappa’s elder daughter Anitha’s college, pretends to fall for Anitha. Padayappa, wishing to secure Anitha’s future with Sarathi (a plan tied to Nandhini’s family), confronts the manipulation. The wedding becomes a battlefield as Chandru’s ruse is revealed and Padayappa races to secure the union before it’s too late. In the ensuing chaos, Suryaprakash is killed in a car accident, raising the stakes even higher.

Armed with a machine gun, Neelambari reaches the temple where Anitha and Chandru’s ceremony is unfolding and intends to kill Padayappa. In a climactic moment, Padayappa saves Neelambari’s life by shielding her from danger—blocking a bull’s attack while dodging her bullet fire—and the would-be assassin is finally defeated. Overwhelmed by defeat and unable to proceed, Neelambari commits suicide, vowing revenge in a future birth. As the dust settles, Padayappa prays for her soul to find peace and for the family to endure the lessons taught by a turbulent, yet ultimately redemptive, saga.
