Chandran is a fresh graduate looking for his first job, living with his sister Uma who has little more than a doctor friend as support. A family physician who knows Chandran well suggests he attends an interview at the import-export company run by Sriramachandramurthy, a man rooted in traditional values who prizes appearances and social norms. He is a sports fan but looks down on young athletes, and he believes that a man’s moustache is a sign of character. With a plan to win him over, Chandran adopts a carefully curated demeanor: he wears a Nehru jacket as a nod to simple, respectable fashion; he introduces himself by his full name every time; he takes care of his moustache, shows polite respect to elders, and signals a disinterest in sports and drama, arguing they don’t contribute to the home or nation’s wellbeing. The approach works, and Chandran lands the job shortly after his interview, much to his relief and his sister’s pride.

Life at the job soon becomes a test of nerve. One day, Chandran pretends his mother is ill to take a break at a football match, a move that draws the ire of his boss when he discovers him there. To avoid dismissal, Chandran fabricates a story about having met his moustache-less twin Indran at the stadium, a clever ruse inspired by a film plot his friend Nagesh is shooting. Sriramachandramurthy buys the ruse, and in a surprising turn of generosity hires “Indran” to teach his daughter Sarojini music. From this moment, Chandran must juggle two identities: the diligent employee under his real name and the would-be musician for Sarojini as Indran. The ruse grows more complicated as Sarojini and Indran fall in love, a development that adds both tenderness and danger to his double life.

A cunning employee named Kattabomman, who works for Sriramachandramurthy, discovers Chandran’s secret and begins leveraging it for regular payoffs. The pressure intensifies when Sriramachandramurthy asks Chandran to bring his “mother” to meet his own mother. Chandran relies on a friend’s help and calls in a wealthy socialite, Meenakshi Duraiswamy, to pose as Chandran’s widowed mother, creating another layer of cover. Yet the truth remains precariously close to exposure. Chandran finally resolves to tell Sarojini the whole truth, while Sarojini’s friend urges him to confess to Sriramachandramurthy as well. But the tension reaches a fever pitch when Kattabomman confronts Chandran with a demand for ₹5,000, exposing Chandran’s moustache deception and pushing Sriramachandramurthy to a breaking point.

Sriramachandramurthy misreads the situation, thinking Indran has impersonated Chandran in a bid to marry Sarojini, and he pursues them through the city in a reckless car chase. The chase ends with Uma appearing to be injured, a blow that testifies to the peril of the lie. In the courtroom, Sriramachandramurthy is sued for injuring Uma, with lawyer Charuhasan delivering a dramatic monologue that seems to close the case in his favor. But Chandran reveals a new twist: Charuhasan is actually an actor hired by Chandran, and Uma’s supposed crippling injury was part of the ruse to keep the deception alive. As the truth comes to light, all the main players gather and reveal the whole story to the shaken boss.

In the end, the pressure lifts as Sriramachandramurthy confronts the web of lies he’s woven. He locks himself away, and when he returns, he has shaved off his moustache, a symbolic act that suggests he no longer wants to be defined by appearances alone. He speaks to a statue of Muruga, hoping for guidance, only for the statue’s image to morph into that of Ganesha, who offers a gentle apology for his own role in the deception. The film closes on a note of reconciliation and self-reflection, underscoring themes of honesty, family bonds, and the consequences of living a double life, while leaving the door open for a more grounded, sincere future.
