Kalki 1996

Chellamma, a gifted singer, is married to Prakash, a chauvinistic industrialist whose domineering attitude and cutting words poison their marriage. Chellamma struggles with the heartbreak of infertility as his harsh remarks, echoed by his mother, erode any warmth left between them. When he forbids her from singing, the final straw breaks the bond, and they divorce. Prakash soon remarries Karpagam, a gentle, dutiful wife, while Chellamma remains single, supported by a loyal cook named Kokila.

Kalki, who works in an advertising agency, is relentlessly pursued by coworker and model Paranjothi. She stands firm in rejecting his advances and challenges the conventional notions of love and sentiment. Chellamma and Kalki grow closer after a few encounters, and Kalki moves in as a paying guest. Yet an unlikely turn of events reshapes their lives: Kalki forms a complicated friendship with Prakash, and an affair between them leads to Kalki bearing his child.

As Kalki navigates this new reality, she helps reveal the pattern of hurt that Prakash has inflicted on Chellamma, prompting a harsh but necessary confrontation with the past. Karpagam, meanwhile, arrives at the moment of delivery with a lawyer by her side, threatening Prakash with divorce if things stay as they are. Yet Prakash experiences a shift; he recognises his mistakes and seeks a chance to change, offering to honor two conditions: he must not hurt Kalki’s child, and he should live with Kalki.

Kalki meets them and makes her choice clear—she does not want to live with them, nor is she ready to relinquish the child. Before delivering, Kalki visits Chellamma and explains that she did live with Prakash to teach him a lesson and that the child was born for Chellamma’s sake; she entrusts the newborn to Chellamma after birth. The path ahead remains difficult, and society’s judgment weighs heavily on Kalki, pushing her to seek solace with Paranjothi, who is waiting for her as she finally confesses her love for him.
