In the quiet and regal town of Lakshmipuram, Vinod Varma, Prithviraj Sukumaran, finds himself hopelessly in love with Aswathy, Karthika Mathew, a scion of the Lakshmipuram royal family. The lineage stands as a symbol of grandeur, yet it secretly guards old wounds and dark secrets. Love faces whispered warnings and the stern disapproval of Aswathy’s mother, but devotion prevails. Against the odds, Aswathy elopes with Vinod, choosing a future of love and freedom over the palace’s rigid expectations.
Their unborn child softens the hearts around them, and for a time the couple is welcomed back into the fold. Pooradam Thirunal Valiya Koyi Thampuran, known as Kuttikrishnan, and Cheriya Koyi Thampuran, Kochuraman, along with their wives Bhagyalakshmi and Sakunthala Devi, greet them with cautious hope, and the family seeks to mend the rift that years of pride and fear had carved between them. Jagathy Sreekumar brings the complex charisma of Kuttikrishnan, while Jagadish embodies Kochuraman. The respectable matriarchs—Bhagyalakshmi and Sakunthala Devi—stand as pillars of tradition, and their presence promises a fragile peace.
Yet fate has other plans. On the night that should be filled with joy, Aswathy endures a cruel turn of events and dies after childbirth, leaving behind a mother overwhelmed by grief and a newborn daughter named Ammu. The palace, once a cradle of ritual and order, begins to murmur with strange whispers and shadowy presences. Ammu, though innocent, seems wrapped in something otherworldly, and the elders fear a possession has taken root within the child.
To shield Ammu, Vinod and the family seek help from Indu, Sharmilee, a gentle caretaker who agrees to look after the baby. However, the atmosphere thickens when Indu herself is gripped by an unseen force. The family turns to Valliyankattu Thirumeni, a revered exorcist with a reputation for commanding dark energies, who arrives bearing an enchanted plate and a grave directive: bury the plate deep within the grounds of the old Lakshmipuram palace, the wellspring of their torment.
As they carry out the ritual, the house seems to breathe with shadows. The spirits of Ammu and Indu rise, their eyes vacant and chilling, and madness seeps into the minds of the once-respected elders. A skilled psychiatrist, Dr. Sundaresan, played by Salim Kumar, arrives to bring science and order to a situation steeped in superstition, his rational approach clashing with the ancient beliefs that still haunt the palace.
Meanwhile, Mahendra Varma, the third brother who has returned from Kuwait, is drawn to Indu’s ethereal beauty with a dangerous intensity. What begins as desire quickly reveals itself as an unholy fixation: Indu is not mortal. She is a spirit bound to the world by a great injustice, and Mahendra’s fixation becomes a perilous chase that threatens to consume them all. The elders seek the guidance of Valliyankattu Thirumeni once more, and through his unfolding tale, the past is dragged from the shadows.
The story unfolds to reveal a century-spanning history. In a time when Tipu Sultan’s advance cast a long shadow, Manaveda Varma, a Keralite king, allies with the British to fend off the invader. Yet the cost of loyalty is steep: Indumathi Devi, wife of the valiant Chandrachoodan, is betrayed by Manaveda’s schemes, and Indumathi’s fate becomes a cruel engine of vengeance. Manavedan’s cowardly choice to barter Indumathi’s dignity to the British leads to a brutal act—Indumathi is beheaded in a palace chamber, her young daughter Ammu buried alive with her mother’s cursed echo.
The past does not stay buried. Reincarnation threads pull the betrayals and the betrayed into the present. Aswathy’s fate mirrors the old tragedy, and Mahendra’s fear of a prophecy—tied to a child born under the “Karthika” star—forces him to commit dreadful acts, including harming Ammu’s newborn kin. His own senses begin to fail: a lost eye, then failing hearing, as the ancestral guilt tightens its grip.
Determined to erase the danger Ammu and Vinod represent, Mahendra dispatches men to hunt them down. But destiny cannot be outrun. In a climactic exorcism, Valliyankattu Thirumeni summons his power as Ammu and Vinod seek sanctuary once more. The battle reaches a fever pitch, and Ammu—embodying Indumathi’s wrath—confronts Mahendra. With a final, terrible act of vengeance, she ends his life and breaks the centuries-old curse that haunted Lakshmipuram.
As dawn spills through the palace, the ghosts finally find their rest. Ammu, now free from the curses of history, steps into a future with Vinod and Indu, together in a new light, while the sorrow that once bound Lakshmipuram fades into memory. The family, scarred but whole, embraces a peace hard-won and long-awaited.
