Ayyadurai and Madasamy are close friends and landowners from different castes in Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, who dedicate themselves to helping people endure the brutal drought that shadows the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The two men navigate the social fault lines of their era as they work to keep their community alive, offering aid where government relief falls short and standing up to those who swell with power and prejudice. The town’s peace is fragile, but their alliance stands as a beacon for many who believe in doing right, even when the odds are stacked against them.

The local MLA, Shanmugapandi, uses his position to smuggle government rice, a move that sparks protests and anger among the people. When the word spreads, he shifts routes to the Karaiyar, hoping to dodge scrutiny, but the scheme is thwarted by the very villagers who depend on the aid. In a night of chaos, Ayyadurai intervenes as Shanmugapandi fires on the crowd, aiming at Madasamy. The fearless act of bravery—he hurls himself between the gun and his friend and delivers a brutal knock with the gun’s hilt—results in Shanmugapandi’s death. The crowd rises to his defense, shielding him from police and urging him to enter the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by-elections, a testament to the trust the people place in his leadership.

Jumping to the present, Ayyadurai has served as the unopposed MLA of Tenkasi for more than three decades. He returns from Chennai after resigning his post because the state department would not sanction his plans to renovate the lakes in his constituency. The homecoming at the Tenkasi Junction railway station is warm, with the community welcoming him back alongside his son, Chelladurai, and the steadfast friend Madasamy. In the wings stands Selvi, Selvi, Madasamy’s teenage daughter, who secretly loves Chelladurai and has even chosen to fail her 12th standard exams to secure a future with him.

The flame of vengeance burns in Karuppusamy(/actor/prakash-raj), Shanmugapandi’s son, who has sought to defeat or kill Ayyadurai for years. He has attempted murder twenty times and plotted to shape the town’s fate through a ruthless blend of caste politics and personal vendetta. On the romance front, Selvi confesses her affection for Chelladurai, but he hesitates, aware that crossing caste lines could ignite a family feud larger than they can manage. A flashback reveals Chelladurai’s arranged marriage had collapsed the night before the ceremony when Thulasi, portrayed by Thulasi, eloped with another man, leaving him publicly humiliated and wary of tying the knot.

After Selvi’s failed exam, her families agree to marry, but Karuppusamy seizes the moment to drive a wedge between them. He engineers a police intervention, alleging Selvi is underage and that the wedding would be illegal, forcing a postponement. The delay fans suspicion and fractures the once-strong four-generation friendship between Ayyadurai and Madasamy, with Karuppusamy using the rift to pull Madasamy into a trap that could secure him the murder charge against Ayyadurai.

The political chessboard intensifies as general election dates loom. The ruling party grants Karuppusamy another opportunity to win, while Ayyadurai cannot stand due to the old murder case. He nominates his son, Chelladurai, in his stead. In a high-stakes gambit, Karuppusamy intends to murder Madasamy and pin the crime on Chelladurai. Yet a courageous act from Chelladurai saves Madasamy from harm, and in a tense turn, Chelladurai hands over his withdrawal form to Karuppusamy, explaining that he will allow him to become the unopposed MLA because, at heart, he is a good man and his fighting spirit is aimed at protecting the people, not tearing them apart. Realizing the depth of his misjudgments, Karuppusamy apologizes to both Ayyadurai and Chelladurai. The sacrifice leaves Ayyadurai choosing to stay in prison to atone for the past. In a final shift of power, Karuppusamy becomes the MLA, and Chelladurai and Selvi marry to unify the feuding families and restore hope to their community.
