Neelakantam Naidu is a powerful factionist who rules his world with iron resolve and a network of loyal followers. His most devoted ally, Narasimha, stands ready to sacrifice his life for the master, embodying a culture where loyalty is tested in blood and risk. The balance of this dangerous empire hinges on their uneasy code of allegiance, where every decision could tilt the scales toward vengeance or protection.

After years of hardship with childbirth, Neelakantam’s wife Tulasi bears a daughter. Priests warn she is affected by jalagandam, a water-born curse, and decree that the child must be protected by a rite steeped in distance and ritual. They name her Gangotri and warn that she carries this peril. To shield her, they prescribe a protective journey: the sacred site Gangotri in the Himalayas and a fifteen-year abhyangana snanam, a ceremonial bath believed to wash away danger.

Gangotri grows up under strict protection, with Simhadri, Narasimha’s son, as her constant companion and entertainer. Their bond deepens into a close friendship, a lifeline of warmth amid the cold, controlling world around them. Tragedy strikes when Simhadri’s mother, Simhadri’s Mother, is killed in a trap set for Neelakantam, shaking the foundations of trust and safety. As Gangotri matures, her paternal aunt imposes rigid restrictions on her interactions with Simhadri, viewing their closeness as improper. When Simhadri secretly visits, Neelakantam discovers the breach, and anger erupts into violence, with Neelakantam’s sister casting a shadow of infamy over their relationship.

The conflict intensifies as Narasimha intervenes, triggering a bitter rift between him and Neelakantam. Believing Narasimha to have ulterior motives, Neelakantam retaliates by planting bombs at Narasimha’s house, killing him and sealing a brutal turn in the saga. Simhadri, initially unaware of the full tragedy, confronts Neelakantam upon learning the truth and vows to marry Gangotri within a year. He retreats to the holy Gangotri, waiting for the final ritual bath as a pledge to claim the woman he loves.

Gangotri finally reaches the sacred site, and the two lovers attempt to elope. Neelakantam intercepts them and stabs Simhadri, plunging Gangotri into despair and driving her to an attempted suicide. Yet the moment of deepest loss is tempered by a glimmer of hope: Simhadri regains consciousness after hearing the people’s beloved flute, a melody that binds their hearts. Realizing the depth of their love, the two lovers find their way back to each other, overcoming the cruelty of circumstance and the weight of tradition to embrace a future together.
