Frank Ferguson: Movies & Box Office

Frank S. Ferguson (December 25, 1899 – September 12, 1978) was a prolific American character actor whose career spanned nearly five decades, appearing in hundreds of films and television episodes. Born in the small town of Ferndale, California, he was the younger of two children of Scottish‑born merchant W. Thomas Ferguson and his American wife Annie Boynton, and he graduated from Ferndale Union High School in 1917. He pursued higher education with a bachelor’s degree in speech and drama from the University of California and a master’s from Cornell University, later teaching at both UCLA and Cornell before turning fully to the stage. As a young man he became associated with the Pasadena Community Playhouse, where he not only acted but also directed numerous productions, establishing himself as a versatile theatre professional. Ferguson made his film debut in Gambling on the High Seas (released 1940) and quickly amassed a remarkable filmography that included nearly 200 feature films such as Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) where he played the irascible Mr. McDougal. His television career was equally extensive; he is perhaps best remembered for the role of Swedish ranch handyman Gus Broeberg on My Friend Flicka (1956) and as the Calverton veterinarian on Lassie, as well as multiple recurring appearances on classics like The Andy Griffith Show, Bonanza, Perry Mason and Maverick. In the 1960s he portrayed Pa Stockdale on No Time for Sergeants and later embodied Eli Carson on the primetime serial Peyton Place and its daytime continuation Return to Peyton Place. Ferguson continued working until 1977, a year before his death from cancer in Los Angeles at age 78, leaving behind a legacy of reliable supporting performances that helped define the golden age of American television and film.
