Willis Bouchey was an American character actor whose career spanned over two decades, from the early 1950s through the early 1970s. Born on May 24, 1907 in Vernon, Michigan, he initially pursued work in radio, where he portrayed the title role in Captain Midnight and appeared in series such as Kitty Keene, Inc. and The Story of Bud Barton. By the mid‑1950s he transitioned to the silver screen, earning memorable supporting roles in classics like The Big Heat (1953), Pickup on South Street (1953), and the western epic The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), in which he delivered the film’s final line, Nothing’s too good for the man who shot Liberty Valance. He became a frequent collaborator of director John Ford, appearing in twelve of Ford’s productions and solidifying his reputation as a reliable member of the director’s stock company. Bouchey’s television work was equally extensive; he was a regular in Jack Webb’s Dragnet stock company, portrayed judges on Perry Mason in 23 episodes, and guest‑starred on series ranging from The Twilight Zone (“The Masks”) to The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and The Andy Griffith Show. His filmography also includes notable uncredited appearances in From Here to Eternity, How the West Was Won, and A Star Is Born. Throughout his career Bouchey was praised for his dignified presence, authoritative demeanor, and the subtle humanity he brought to roles such as sheriffs, judges, and military officers.
