Danny Forrester, Tab Hunter, an All-American athlete, heads home to Baltimore in January 1942 after saying goodbye to his family and his girlfriend Kathy, Mona Freeman. The train soon pulls in a procession of other recruits headed to the Marine Corps, a diverse group that includes the hard-drinking Andy Hookens, Aldo Ray; the bookish Marion Hotchkiss, John Lupton; the stubborn Navajo Joe Gomez, Perry Lopez; L.Q. Jones, L.Q. Jones from Arkansas; Speedy, Fess Parker from Texas; and the eager Ski, William Campbell, who longs to escape the slums and make something of his life. The group also includes Susan, Susan Morrow Ski’s girl, and a host of others who will soon share the same grind, danger, and camaraderie of boot camp.

After boot camp, the men are pushed into radio school and placed in a battalion under Maj. Sam “High Pockets” Huxley, Van Heflin. The training trenches from physical drills to complex signaling and communication work, all under the stern, demanding eye of Sgt. Mac, James Whitmore. On weekends, they get passes to San Diego, a brief crack at normal life before the next trial of discipline and courage. In one lean, smoky bar, Ski drowns his sorrows over a past heartbreak—his loneliness a thread that will braid through the story—but the group steps in to calm the situation, and Danny finds himself pulled toward Elaine Yarborough, Dorothy Malone, a married USO worker who offers him a measure of solace. Their budding connection seems to promise something gentle amid the rough-and-tumble world of training, yet even as Danny’s evenings glow with a possible romance, Mac sees a tremor in the boy’s performance and arranges for him to call Kathy long-distance, trying to bridge the distance between home and the battlefield.

In Baltimore, Danny makes a bold move: he elopes with Kathy, tying two lives together just as the war’s pressures tighten around them. Meanwhile, Marion is drawn to Rae, Anne Francis, a mysterious, alluring figure who flits between the Coronado ferry and the parties that mark the regiment’s rising sense of purpose. Rae’s evasive, enigmatic nature becomes less a riddle and more a reflection of the losses and secrets that war often hides. Marion’s hope to chronicle war through his writing deepens as Rae appears to admire him, though she keeps the details of her life veiled. The regiment’s social world grows increasingly tangled when Rae shows up with other B-girls at a party celebrating their orders to ship out, hinting at the personal costs that war exacts from every soldier.

The battalion eventually sails to Wellington, New Zealand, where they are warmly welcomed, a welcome contrast to the austere discipline of boot camp. Andy, who has learned to respect boundaries and the meaning of responsibility, tries to woo Pat Rogers, Nancy Olson the wife of a local farmer, insinuating himself into her life after learning of her husband’s supposed death in Africa. Pat, however, gently sets him straight, and when she invites him to visit her family’s farm, the two acknowledge a shared attraction but decide to keep their relationship to friendship for the time being. Christmas brings a quiet, reflective moment before the Sixth Regiment—now known colloquially as “Huxley’s Harlots”—is sent to Guadalcanal to mop up stubborn Japanese resistance.

Back in New Zealand, Pat nurses the malaria-stricken Andy, and a more hopeful, if complicated, romance begins to bloom between them. Huxley, newly promoted to lieutenant colonel, pushes his men to extreme limits in a 60-mile hike designed to test stamina and team spirit. The grueling trek proves the battalion’s exceptional fitness and resolve, and there is a palpable sense that these Marines may be destined for something far larger than the training grounds. Yet the command structure remains uneasy; Huxley longs for his unit to join the Tarawa invasion, but the higher-ups hold them back to clear remnants of Japanese resistance first. Pat’s relationship with Andy deepens, but she reveals she is pregnant, and together they contemplate a future that war may not easily allow. With Huxley’s help, they navigate red tape to marry, a moment of hope that comes just as the regiment prepares to move out again.

Tarawa arrives, and the men are tested in the harsh reality of frontline combat. The invasion is brutal, and Marion and many others lose their lives in the executing of orders and the chaos of battle. From a base on a Hawaiian island, Huxley learns that other battalions are being moved into the hard fight, and he risks court-martial to argue that his battalion’s unique talents are being wasted on side assignments. Initially, Gen. Snipes, Raymond Massey, is offended by Huxley’s bluntness, but he relents and assigns the battalion to the invasion of Red Beach on Saipan—the war’s most dangerous mission in the campaign. Isolated from the rest of the division, Huxley’s men suffer heavy casualties under relentless artillery fire. Huxley himself is killed in the action, while Danny and Andy are seriously wounded. The Navy destroyer that finally pins down the Japanese allows the Marines to complete their mission, but the losses weigh heavily on everyone, and the sense of sacrifice hangs heavy in the air.

In the aftermath, Andy battles not only his injuries but a growing despair as he confronts the prospect of a World War II without his future family or the chance to be with Pat. Pat, resilient and steadfast, nurses him through recovery, even as he faces demoralization and the fear of losing the life they hoped to share. Mac’s tough, direct encouragement helps him find a way back from the brink, reminding him that Pat still loves him and that their child is a future worth fighting for. Eventually, Andy accepts that his best path is to return to Pat and their baby, completing rehabilitation with a renewed sense of purpose. Danny, similarly, is given a medical discharge and returns by train to Baltimore, escorted by Mac as a symbol of the families waiting for news back home. The ship of life moves on, and in Baltimore, Danny is finally able to reunite with Kathy as fresh-faced recruits board the returning trains, a quiet, hopeful ending that still bears the scars of a long, brutal time.

Across a battlefield and through the long arc of training, combat, and homecoming, the Marines’ bond holds fast even as individual destinies bend under the weight of war. The men endure sleepless nights, blistered feet, and the constant fear of loss, yet they discover in each other a resilience that sustains them when courage alone may not be enough.
