Private Peter Moss, James Edwards, a paralyzed Black war veteran, undergoes psychoanalytic sessions with the Army psychiatrist, Jeff Corey. He discovers he can walk again only when he confronts his fear of forever being an outsider. The narrative unfolds through flashback techniques, tracing Moss’s past as an Engineer topography specialist who was part of a reconnaissance patrol secretly landed from an AVR on a Japanese-held island in the South Pacific to prepare it for a major amphibious assault.
The mission is led by a young Major Robinson, Douglas Dick, and the team includes Moss’s lifelong friend Finch, Lloyd Bridges, whose death weighs heavily on Moss; the bigoted Corporal T.J., Steve Brodie; and the sturdy but troubled Sergeant Mingo, Frank Lovejoy. As the patrol is detected, Finch is abandoned and captured by the Japanese. The enemy compels Finch to cry out to the rest of the group, crushing him when he later escapes only to die in Moss’s arms. A firefight ensues: Mingo is wounded in the arm, Moss is immobilized, and Corporal T.J. helps carry Moss back to the AVR boat, which protects the fighters with its twin .50 caliber guns.
In the climactic sequence, the Army psychiatrist presses Moss to break through his paralysis by shouting a racial slur. The moment carries a brutal, undeniable weight, and it marks a turning point—Moss will never bow to prejudice again. The film closes on a note of wary hope: Moss and Mingo choose to go into civilian life together, striking up a partnership that suggests a future beyond the war’s shadows.
