Shortly after discovering that they are set to return home, a group of American soldiers, including Lt. Col. William Marsh (Samuel L. Jackson), SGT Vanessa Price (Jessica Biel), SPC Tommy Yates (Brian Presley), SPC Jamal Aiken (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson), and PVT Jordan Owens (Chad Michael Murray), receive orders for one final humanitarian mission. Their objective: to deliver much-needed medical supplies to a remote village in Iraq. However, their journey quickly spirals into chaos when they become ensnared in a brutal ambush by insurgents.

As the convoy navigates through a cramped street, the forward vehicles find themselves under siege, forced to engage with the attackers in a life-or-death battle. Meanwhile, the rear vehicles attempt to break free by veering onto a side street, only to encounter a hidden improvised explosive device concealed within the carcass of a dead dog. In a harrowing turn of events, SGT Price, while driving the vehicle, sustains life-threatening injuries, her body shielded to some extent by the front seat passenger who tragically loses his life in the blast. In their desperate pursuit of the young boys who planted the bomb, along with the other assailants, the team suffers further casualties, culminating in the heartbreaking loss of one of their own.

As the chaos unfolds, Aiken, Yates, and Owens embark on a mission to confront the enemy. However, their plans take a dark turn when Aiken stumbles over loose bricks and injures his back, forcing his two comrades to proceed without him. The tension escalates as Yates, wounded in the leg, falls behind while Owens recklessly charges after a shooter, only to be fatally shot from behind. Grief-stricken, Yates finds Owens bleeding heavily and cradles him in a desperate attempt to save him, but it’s too late; Owens dies in Yates’s arms.

The intense scenario continues at a field hospital, which comes under mortar attack, injuring numerous personnel and obliterating vital medical supplies. The medical staff’s valiant efforts to relieve the suffering seem almost futile as the shells rain down. In a particularly intense moment, a distraught soldier threatens Dr. Marsh with a Beretta, demanding immediate attention for a fellow comrade, showcasing the extreme pressure and anguish faced by those in the field. Amidst the chaos, SGT Price and Aiken are both evacuated to a medical facility. Price undergoes a traumatic amputation, losing her right hand, while Aiken miraculously survives and returns to the unit when they rotate back to the States.

When they return home, the scars of war linger heavily within them. Price battles daily challenges, such as learning to navigate life, including unbuttoning her clothing as a one-handed individual, while trying to resume her career as a physical education teacher and basketball coach. Tommy, on the other hand, grapples with finding employment, having lost his job at a gun shop during deployment. With his father pressuring him towards the police academy, he witnesses Jamal, who is struggling with his own demons and denied VA benefits, leading to a downward spiral that propels Tommy to abandon the academy altogether.

Dr. Marsh, consumed by guilt and despair, begins to descend into self-destructive behavior, as his son grows increasingly troubled by the impact of the war on their family. In a drunken haze on Thanksgiving, he brings home a trio of yard workers to share their meal, much to his family’s dismay, and later is discovered by his wife with a loaded pistol, hinting at suicidal thoughts. He reluctantly agrees to seek therapy for his PTSD, confiding that he feels emotionally detached from the soldiers who perished, a stark contrast to the empathy he believes a doctor should possess. The war has steadily gnawed at him, leading to an emotional breakdown.

Jamal’s struggles peak tragically when he gets involved in a hostage situation at a fast-food diner, resulting in police intervention where he is shot. Meanwhile, Dr. Marsh’s wife remains steadfast by his side, offering support in his journey towards healing. As Price finds new love in another coach at her school, her initial hesitance to embrace this new relationship reflects her ongoing struggle to adjust. After a tumultuous confrontation with his father, Tommy ultimately decides to re-enlist, seeking redemption and purpose in a world that feels irrevocably changed.

As the film draws to a close, there exists a glimmer of hope; Marsh’s son plays joyfully in a soccer match at Price’s school. Life continues as Price introduces her new companion to Dr. Marsh’s wife as they solidify dinner plans, hinting at the process of healing and rebuilding relationships. The last frames reveal Tommy enduring the rigors of basic training once again, ready to patrol the streets of Iraq, ensuring that others do not endure the same horrors he faced.

Before the credits roll, viewers are reminded of a profound truth encapsulated in a quote by Niccolo Machiavelli: > “Wars will begin where you will, but they do not end where you please.”
