Spoilers ahead
In the summer of 1943, right after Benito Mussolini’s government falls and the German army moves to occupy much of Italy, the little hill town of Santa Vittoria clings to its lifeblood: wine. The villagers learn that a German column is coming to confiscate most of their wine and ship it to Germany, threatening the town’s very way of life. Under the leadership of the newly appointed mayor Italo Bombolini, Anthony Quinn, the townspeople rally to defend their livelihood. Until days before his rise, Bombolini had been regarded as something of a buffoon by nearly everyone, including his wife, Anna Magnani, and his appointment by pro-Mussolini politicians was seen as a ploy to divert anger away from the people.
