Two struggling miners, Flapjack Simms [Wallace Ford] and Banty Jones [Forrest Lewis], head to the office of the new Nome gold commissioner, Alex McNamara [Rory Calhoun], to complain about claim jumpers and protect their hard-won stakes in the Alaskan frontier. When the office isn’t staffed, they seek help at Cherry Malotte’s gambling saloon, where Cherry [Anne Baxter] uses wit and resolve to calm their tempers and steer them away from rash actions. Her quick thinking buys time as she hatches a plan to secure the miners’ claims, moving to the commissioner’s office to press the case while Alex is briefly absent.
Alex McNamara’s arrival is quick on the heels of good news: Judge Stillman [Carl Benton Reid] is en route to Nome to review all legal matters surrounding the mines, a development that promises to sort out the tangled claims—if time can be bought and the right allies found. In the meantime, a ship returns Cherry’s sweetheart Roy Glennister [Jeff Chandler] to town, and she hurries to meet him, compelled by her croupier Blackie [Ray Danton] to make a dramatic entrance. Roy’s homecoming isn’t simple, for he is traveling with Helen Chester [Barbara Britton], a striking newcomer who intrigues him and unsettles Cherry. Frustrated and hurt, Cherry lashes out in a moment of passion, leaving Roy and his business partner Dextry [John McIntire] to pick up the pieces.
Dextry is Roy’s co-owner of a nearby mine, and his presence compounds the tension as Cherry’s anger settles into a wary, wary reunion with Roy. Roy insists that his love for Cherry remains, but the spark has been tested, and old loyalties—along with political maneuvering—begin to surface in the shadows of Nome. Alex, the Judge, and Helen quickly emerge as more than mere bystanders; their actions hint at a broader conspiracy to seize the miners’ hard-earned claims, a scheme that Rex Williams would deem dangerously close to being a miscarriage of justice. As the town reels, Blackie’s violence becomes a blunt tool to tilt the scales: he shoots the town marshal [Roy Barcroft], framing Roy for the crime and placing the sheriff’s murder in the spotlight.
A jailbreak follows, yet Cherry races to warn Roy that as soon as he escapes, Alex plans to ambush him and make the shooting appear lawful. The stakes rise as Roy and Dextry, along with Blackie and their men, strike back at Alex’s men at the mine, driving the confrontation into the open. In the ensuing shootout, Roy’s faction gains the upper hand, Blackie dies, and his deathbed confession reveals that he killed the sheriff’s killer and framed Roy—a twist that shifts the balance of justice in Nome.
With the truth gradually coming to light, Roy rushes back to town and confronts Alex in the saloon, their brutal fight drawing the entire room into its heat. Roy’s victory in the brawl becomes a turning point, and the tension between former allies, lovers, and rivals begins to resolve. As the dust settles, Cherry and Roy find their way back to each other, their bond tempered by trial and betrayal but still steadfast in the harsh, unforgiving landscape of Nome.
