Gambler Jason Sweet Glenn Ford wins a flock of sheep in a poker game and then hauls them by train into the heart of cattle country, where the arrival of livestock unsettles the local town and sparks sharp curiosity as well as defiant resistance. Sweet is quick to show he’s more than luck with a deck or a pistol, and he makes a bold first impression by taking on the town’s toughest man, “Jumbo” McCall [Mickey Shaughnessy], handily beating him and proving himself as a skilled gunfighter. The newcomer’s presence unsettles Dell Payton [Shirley MacLaine], who is drawn to his confidence even as she tries to reckon with the change he represents in her life. Dell’s fiancé, the influential cattle baron known as Colonel Steven Bedford [Leslie Nielsen], feels the ground shifting beneath him, and his discomfort grows as he realizes Sweet and Bedford once shared a past as rivals or acquaintances, with Sweet suspected to be the notorious Johnny Bledsoe, a card shark and gunman who has reformed his image.
As the power struggle for control over the town unfolds, Bedford responds by calling in Chocktaw Neal [Pernell Roberts], a man with old grudges against Sweet. Chocktaw and two partners intend to trap Sweet, but Dell and Milt Masters [Edgar Buchanan] step in to defuse the ambush, disarming the would-be shooters before a fatal mistake is made. Cornered and caught off guard, Chocktaw draws on Sweet in a moment of panic and is killed, shifting the balance of the feud but not ending the tension that grips the region.
The confrontation culminates in a classic Western face‑off between Bedford and Sweet, a moment that settles their rivalry and ends in Bedford’s death. Sweet’s response to the town’s expectations and his own ambitions reveals a deeper motive than sheer rebellion: he chooses to part with the sheep and buy cattle instead, explaining that he has kept the flock only to resist being pushed around by anyone who tries to command him. Dell’s jaw drops in disbelief at this turn of events, but she ultimately understands the new direction their relationship must take.
In the end, the couple rides away together, their future shaped by a hard‑won balance between independence and partnership. The story lingers on the idea that power in this frontier town is shaped not just by gunfire, but by choices about what you’re willing to stand up for—and what you’re willing to walk away from.
