Ed Hutcheson, Humphrey Bogart, is the crusading managing editor of The Day, a large metropolitan newspaper. He remains steadfastly loyal to publisher Margaret Garrison, Ethel Barrymore, but she is on the verge of selling the paper to interests who plan to permanently cease its operation. Hutcheson also faces personal turmoil as his former wife Nora, Kim Hunter, is about to remarry.

On the professional front, Hutcheson pushes his reporters to pursue the murder of a young woman, Bessie Smith, and the possible involvement of racketeer Tomas Rienzi, a storyline that could either boost the paper’s circulation or mark its final chapter. The newsroom learns that Bessie had been Rienzi’s mistress, and that her brother Herman Schmidt, who had illegal dealings with the gangster, may have crucial information.
