A recurring ballad opens this tale with a line about death, murder and revenge, setting a bleak mood on the Wyoming frontier. Vern Haskell is a rugged ranch hand whose world collapses when his fiancée, Beth Forbes, is raped and murdered during a store robbery. Consumed by fury, he bolts after the two thieves, first chasing with a posse and then pressing on alone.

In the aftermath, Vern tracks down a survivor of the crime, a man named Whitey. He finds Whitey shot in the back by his own partner after a bitter quarrel, and in his dying moments the man gasps a clue: the phrase “Chuck-a-Luck.” Vern pieces together the connection, and his pursuit becomes a relentless hunt for meaning in those dying words. The search broadens as Vern questions everyone he meets about that phrase, determined to uncover who is behind the tragedy.

The trail leads to a woman named Altar Keane, a figure connected with Chuck-a-Luck. When Vern confronts the truth, the other man’s last moments show the game isn’t just chance—it’s tied to a broader web of outlaw activity. Vern is then forced into a tense encounter with the law, killing in self-defense, and is taken into custody. He’s released when the dead man is identified as a wanted outlaw, but a deputy recognizes Altar from Vern’s past as a saloon singer, even if her current life remains shadowed.

Vern’s pursuit takes him deeper into a perilous circle. He learns that after leaving the saloon’s employ, Altar placed a risky bet on a rigged game of chance—wheel-of-fortune style chuck-a-luck—and won big with the help of a gunslinger, Frenchy Fairmont. Frenchy has just been nabbed and is being held in a town called Gunsight, and Vern seizes the chance to gain access by getting arrested as well.

The plan unfolds when Vern and Frenchy break out. Frenchy escorts Vern to a hidden base called the Chuck-a-Luck, a horse ranch near the Mexican border owned by Altar. It’s a no-questions-asked hideout where outlaws can shelter for a price. Among the residents is Kinch, the killer who took Vern’s fiancée’s life—though Vern doesn’t recognize him yet. Kinch notices Vern’s wary, outsider gaze and quietly tracks his moves.

Vern’s presence draws Altar’s attention, and a cautious spark blooms. One night, she wears the brooch that his fiancée wore when she died, drawing Vern into a dangerous game of romance as he probes for who gave her the piece. His pursuit of the truth begins to stir jealousy in Frenchy, who sees the situation shifting under his nose.

Soon Vern participates in a bank robbery with the Chuck-a-Luck crew. Kinch, seeing Vern’s suspicions, takes a shot at him in a concealed strike, but the bullet goes wide. Vern returns to the Chuck-a-Luck to bring Altar her share of the loot, only for Altar to reveal Kinch as the source of the brooch, exposing a painful line of loyalties. Vern speaks plainly about his mission and his contempt for the life Altar has led, while Kinch’s name and the history of violence surface in the open.

Vern attempts to turn Kinch over to the local sheriff, but Kinch escapes with help from the remaining outlaws. Back at the ranch, Altar begins packing, signaling her intent to leave the life she’s led behind. The outlaws come roaring back in a final gambit to seize Altar, igniting a brutal gunfight that pits Frenchy and Vern against the rest. In the chaos, Altar sacrifices herself to shield Frenchy, and Kinch falls to a shot from the very flames of the conflict—fate catching up with both sides of the law. With Kinch dead and the outlaws scattered, Frenchy and Vern ride away together, leaving the Chuck-a-Luck behind and stepping into an uncertain future.

  • Note: The film features a host of supporting figures and a rugged, morally gray landscape that heightens the tension between vengeance and mercy, law and outlaw life, romance and betrayal.
