After his first Broadway flop, songwriter Cole Porter enlists for World War I. Wounded, he ends up in a field hospital where his wit wins over nurse Linda Lee, though their romance must pause as he returns home. Back in New York he stages a string of hit shows; his work later sends him to Europe, where he finally marries Linda. Even with his triumphs, he faces marital strains and unsettling news about a cherished relative.
