John Vickers, a former United States Army officer who also served in the Union Army during the Civil War, has spent eight years chasing vengeance for the murder of the woman he loved. He tracks down one killer, Herb Woodson, and kills him in a tense gunfight, learning from his victim that the other two men have joined the United States Cavalry and are now serving with the ill-fated 7th Cavalry.

Vickers heads to the upper western Dakota Territory to reenlist in the Army as a buck private, determined to keep pursuing justice from within the ranks. He requests assignment under General James Millican’s portrayal of George Armstrong Custer at Fort Abraham Lincoln, hoping proximity to the cavalry will bring him closer to the remaining killers.

On the journey, he steps in when Forrest Tucker as Sgt. O’Hara physically mistreats a young woman. The woman, Polly Bergen as Molly Quade, has come to the fort with her father, Dean Jagger as Sam Quade, to help run a small general store. Molly is grateful for Vickers’s intervention, but O’Hara’s spite lingers, and he soon makes Vickers’s life at the fort even more difficult, assigning him menial and demeaning duties.

During a mission, Captain Gregson, played by Harry Carey Jr., leads a troop that is badly outnumbered by Lakota Sioux warriors. The minuscule force is saved when Custer and his riders ride to the rescue, and the brush with danger earns Vickers a new standing: the general recognizes him as a seasoned Civil War veteran and promotes him to first sergeant.

As tensions rise, O’Hara deserts, and a military wagon train is organized to evacuate civilians from the fort while Custer prepares for a major engagement with Sioux forces near the Little Bighorn River. Along the perilous route, Molly, her father, and Vickers are taken captive, and they discover that ex-Sgt. O’Hara is also a prisoner. In a dramatic turn, O’Hara realizes the battle ahead is doomed and sacrifices himself by charging through a gauntlet to distract the Sioux, giving the others a chance to escape.

With night closing in, Molly, Sam, and Vickers seize unguarded horses and slip away to hide until daylight. A grim truth comes to light for Molly and Vickers: Sam Quade is, in fact, the third killer Vickers has hunted for years. Molly pleads with Vickers not to act on vengeance, but Sam, choosing a different fate, rides off into the night to warn General Custer, an act that will almost certainly seal his own doom and alter the course of the story’s pursuit of justice.
