Ride Out for Revenge 1957

Cheyenne Chief Yellow Wolf, Frank De Kova and his son Little Wolf, Vince Edwards, walk into town in a desperate bid to secure provisions for the coming winter. They hope to meet with army Captain George, Lloyd Bridges, to discuss a possible peace and to obtain supplies, but George has his own agenda: he wants the Indians relocated from their ancestral land.

George pretends to be genuinely interested in Yellow Wolf’s offer of living together in peace, then his man Garvin, Richard Shannon, murders him in the street. George protests that he had only instructed Garvin to “rough up” the chief, a defense he clings to as the crowd recoils.

Marshal Tate, [Rory Calhoun], leans on the side of the tribe and is also in love with Yellow Wolf’s daughter Pretty Willow, a fact that strains his ties to Captain George. This affection irks the captain and inflames the political fault lines at the heart of the town. Tate decides to do the right thing, turns in his badge, and tells his nephew Billy, Michael Winkelman, that it’s time for them to move on to another town.

Amy Porter, Gloria Grahame, a widow who runs the boardinghouse and harbors feelings for Tate, makes a pointed confession about her own prejudices: she cannot accept his love for an Indian woman. Her candid honesty adds a quiet counterpoint to the town’s loud, dangerous power plays.

After Tate’s warnings about potential reprisals are ignored, Captain George panics as tensions flare and violence erupts. He first pleads with Tate for help in killing Little Wolf, then resorts to lies designed to turn Little Wolf and many of the tribe against Tate, accusing him of selfish motives. Pretty Willow, swayed by George’s manipulation, turns against Tate, questioning his loyalty to her family.

In the chaos, Billy—the boy caught between loyalties—meets a tragic end when George’s scheme spirals out of control. A knife duel between Tate and Little Wolf erupts, underscoring the personal stakes at play and the brutal costs of the town’s unresolved conflicts. Amy, who has begun to rethink her prejudice, shelters Pretty Willow at her home, offering a fragile example of compassion amid the fury.

As the dust settles, Captain George clings to a fragile belief that he has the situation under control. But Tate reappears, alive and resolved, and takes matters into his own hands, forcing a reckoning with the town’s tangled loyalties, the fate of the tribe, and the possibility of a future where coexistence might still be possible.
