Joanne Beverly Gilbert was born on July 17, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois, and spent her formative years in the heart of Hollywood, California. She was the daughter of celebrated American lyricist Ray Gilbert, best known for penning the lyrics to Zip‑a‑Dee‑Doo‑Dah, and grew up under the artistic influence of her stepmother, performer Janis Paige. After a brief, unsuccessful stint as a fashion model in New York City, she returned to California where she cultivated a reputation as a nightclub singer, dazzling audiences with her velvet voice and stage presence. Her early exposure to both music and film set the stage for a career that would bridge the golden age of Hollywood and the burgeoning world of television. In 1953 she made her screen debut with an uncredited role in Houdini, quickly moving on to more substantial parts such as Sheila Winthrop in the vibrant musical comedy Red Garters (1954) and Ginny in the critically acclaimed drama The Great Man (1956). Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s she appeared in a mixture of feature films and television episodes, including memorable performances on Perry Mason, The Outer Limits, and Ben Casey. Her final film appearance came in The High Cost of Loving (1958), after which she devoted most of her professional energy to television work. Despite a promising start, her on‑screen career was relatively brief, spanning just over a decade from 1953 to 1966.

During her adult life she married twice, first to screenwriter Danny Arnold (1955‑1956) and later to producer Edward L. Rissien (1958‑1964), though neither marriage produced children. The couple’s unions were childless, and Gilbert remained without offspring throughout her lifetime. She lived a quiet later life in Los Angeles, where she passed away on April 16, 2025, at the age of 92.
