In 1866 a gold rush and a botched treaty push the U.S. Army to build a road and fort on Sioux treaty land. Frontier scout Jim Bridger, whose Cheyenne wife gives him insight into both cultures, sees the powder‑keg tension. Arrogant lieutenant Rob Dancy fans the flames, while Bridger’s own personal struggles hinder his effort to avert war. The story strives for historical accuracy.

Spoilers ahead

Two intertwined threads drive this western: the white fur traders and their relatively cordial relationship with the Sioux, and the distant, formal dynamic between the US Cavalry and the same people.

Jim Bridger, Van Heflin, who bears the Indian name Tomahawk, leads the traders and scouts. A small travelling show run by Julie Madden, Yvonne De Carlo, travels cross-country to a fort, escorted by Lt Dancy, Alex Nicol.
