Two years after the capture of Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), the remnants of his organization known as “the Syndicate” have morphed into a dangerous terrorist group identified as the Apostles. With the CIA’s Special Activities Division hot on the trail of remaining Syndicate members, chaos looms as these operatives remain elusive, launching terror attacks across the globe, including a recent outbreak of smallpox in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is tasked with a critical mission to intercept three stolen plutonium cores, which the Apostles plan to sell to an enigmatic fundamentalist called John Lark. Their nefarious connections to elements of the Eastern European Underworld have led them to acquire these cores from a Russian nuclear base—making them capable of building fully operational nuclear weapons.
In a dire twist, Ethan learns that Lark has kidnapped Nils Debruuk, a nuclear weapons expert pivotal to converting these cores into destructive armaments that can be deployed anywhere within 24 hours. Ethan teams up with Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) to ensure the cores remain out of the Apostles’ hands. However, their plans hit a snag when the Apostles ambush their exchange, and Ethan must choose to save Luther over securing the plutonium.
In a desperate measure, Ethan and his team capture Nils, who is later placed in a simulated hospital environment after the crew threatens him with news of impending nuclear attacks in Jerusalem, Mecca, and the Vatican. Nils agrees to cooperate, but only if they broadcast Lark’s manifesto on international television. This ominous revelation unveils that he had constructed three portable nuclear weapons for the Apostles.
CIA Director Erika Sloane (Angela Bassett) assigns August Walker (Henry Cavill), a lethal operative within the Special Activities Division, to shadow Ethan, ensuring that the mission’s integrity is maintained after previous mishaps. Walker, notorious for eliminating Syndicate operatives, complicates matters further due to his questionable methods.
After parachuting into Paris, Ethan manages to save an unconscious Walker during a storm. Together, they infiltrate a high-stakes fundraiser where Lark is rumored to negotiate a deal with the White Widow (Vanessa Kirby), a black-market arms dealer. Time is of the essence as the White Widow faces imminent dangers if Lark does not make contact before midnight.
A confrontation ensues with a man believed to be Lark, but he is swiftly dispatched by Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), leaving Ethan unable to fully assume Lark’s identity. He decides to pose as Lark at the White Widow’s request and covertly warns her about the dangers she faces from Apostles agents. Amidst the chaos, Ethan successfully extracts her safely under siege.
Tasked with retrieving Solomon Lane from an armored convoy in exchange for the plutonium, Ethan learns that the White Widow is simply a broker facilitating a dangerous transaction. On the brink of capturing Lane, the lines between betrayal and loyalty blur as Walker attempts to undermine Ethan’s efforts, framing him as John Lark in a twisted game of deception.
In a gripping twist of fate, Ethan confronts Walker in a tense standoff that reveals larger implications involving national security and personal vendettas. The stakes escalate as Ethan races against time to prevent Walker from unleashing devastation through the planned nuclear attacks.
The nail-biting climax sees Ethan engaging in an explosive showdown over a glacier, where the fate of millions hangs in the balance. With sheer determination and the unwavering support of his team, including Julia (Michelle Monaghan), Luther, and Benji, Ethan manages to avert disaster. With victory secured and the remaining cores retrieved, the team stands united, while Ethan begins to heal from the traumatic disarray of the past.
