Charlie Lupo, Broderick Crawford, runs the New York branch of a crime syndicate. He is a widower with a worried mother and a grown daughter, Kathy Lupo, Anne Bancroft, along with a new lover, Iris, Marilyn Maxwell. The world he inhabits is cold, calculating, and relentlessly practical, where loyalty is measured in favors and fear. Lupo keeps a tight grip on his operation, balancing personal obligation with the brutal demands of the underworld, all while the city around him hums with intrigue and surveillance.

Enter Nick Magellan, Richard Conte, a hardened hit man from the Chicago mob who makes a strong impression on Lupo and is brought in as his bodyguard. The two men form a wary, uneasy bond born from mutual necessity, and a tension softens into a fragile friendship.
