In the fictional town of Strafford, Connecticut, a hopeful songwriter Alex Burke arrives and quickly becomes the center of attention for the Tuttle family. His arrival stirs feelings in all three daughters: Laurie Tuttle, Fran Tuttle, and Amy Tuttle, each drawn to his charm in different ways. The family dynamics loosen as Alex seems perfectly matched with Laurie, and the pair appear to be meant for one another from the start.

Into this growing harmony steps a friend with a far different outlook, Barney Sloan. Barney’s bleaker view on life stands in stark contrast to Alex’s buoyant spirit, and Laurie tries to coax a more hopeful attitude from him even as she navigates her own blossoming romance with Alex. Meanwhile, Fran is engaged to Bob, and Amy’s emotions run in a different direction, pulling her toward Alex in ways that complicate the family’s cheerful surface.

The Tuttles welcome Barney into their home, hoping his presence will add music and warmth to their days. Yet despite his growing affection for Laurie, Barney wrestles with a lingering sense of unfulfilled self-worth. The tension among the siblings deepens as Alex’s proposal to Laurie is accepted, triggering a cascade of decisions: Fran marries Bob, and Amy’s heartbreak deepens while she keeps a quiet vigil over her own hidden longing for Alex.

Aunt Jessie Tuttle, portrayed by Ethel Barrymore, seems to sense the ache behind Amy’s smile, the unspoken ache that only Amy’s heart can name. The emotional pressure comes to a head when Barney reveals to Laurie that Amy loves Alex, a confession that Laurie refuses to believe until she returns home and witnesses Amy’s tears for herself. The truth shatters the fragile certainty of Laurie’s choice, leading her to a pivotal decision that upends the holidays and the family’s future.

As Christmas draws near, Laurie confesses to Amy that she is pregnant and that her heart still belongs to Barney, not Alex. Amy, in turn, has found affection elsewhere, turning toward Ernest Nichols (often called Ernie) as a new source of hope. The holiday gathering places everyone under one roof once more, with Alex’s professional success casting a long shadow over the personal turmoil.

A fragile plan unfolds as Barney agrees to accompany Bob to the train station, and Laurie’s fate seems tied to a complicated web of loyalties. After dropping Bob off and then leaving Alex at the station, Barney drives into oncoming traffic in a heavy snowstorm, his windshield wipers left off in a fatal moment of despair. He survives the crash, and in a surprising turn of resolve, he begins to rebuild his life, channeling his renewed sense of purpose into a song he had been working on. In the end, he finds a sense of self-worth and a new future in the embrace of Laurie and their forthcoming child, marking a quiet but hopeful resolution to a story of longing, sacrifice, and renewed faith in tomorrow.

In scenes that blend music, romance, and the complexities of family ties, the film explores how love can both elevate and complicate lives, how truth can disrupt comfort, and how—even after heartbreak—people can find a path forward through resilience, connection, and the courage to choose life anew. The story places each character at a crossroads, balancing ambition with affection, and suggests that true self-worth is earned through endurance and brave decisions.
