Marjorie Bennett

Marjorie Bennett was a prolific Australian character actress whose career spanned more than six decades, beginning in the silent‑film era and concluding in the golden age of television. Born on 15 January 1896 in the small town of York, Western Australia, she grew up alongside sisters Enid and Catherine, both of whom also pursued acting careers in Hollywood, creating a remarkable family legacy in early cinema. After moving to the United States, Bennett quickly adapted to the changing industry, securing her first screen credit in 1917. She proved remarkably versatile, transitioning from silent pictures to talkies with ease, appearing in notable films such as Monsieur Verdoux (1947) and Charlie Chaplin’s Limelight (1952), where she played the compassionate landlady opposite Chaplin himself. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, she became a familiar face on television, delivering memorable guest performances on classics like I Love Lucy, The Great Gildersleeve, and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, where she portrayed the endearing Blossom Kenney in ten episodes. Her talent for embodying quirky, often elderly matriarchs shone in the 1973 film Charley Varrick, where she portrayed Mrs. Taft, an elderly gardener with a surprisingly sharp wit.

In the later years of her career, Bennett continued to work steadily, making appearances on iconic series such as Mission: Impossible, Adam‑12, CHiPs, and Night Gallery, and even starring opposite Richard Widmark in the television movie Brock’s Last Case (1973). She remained active in the entertainment industry until her final screen role on Barney Miller in 1980, a testament to her enduring dedication and adaptability. Married to William Cady Jr. from 1932 until his death in 1976, Bennett never had children. She passed away on 14 June 1982 in Hollywood, California, and was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, leaving behind a rich legacy of character work that continues to be celebrated by classic film and television aficionados.
