Never Wave at a WAC 1953

Divorced socialite Jo McBain, daughter of United States Senator Reynolds, longs to join her boyfriend in Paris, where he has been reassigned along with two other military comrades. Her father seizes on the idea of giving her an officer’s commission in the Women’s Army Corps, hoping she’ll be transferred to Paris and start with a path toward high rank. The reality of military life crashes into her as she arrives at basic training, where she discovers she must begin at the bottom and prove herself from scratch.

Her ex-husband Andrew McBain, an Army uniforms designer, leverages his position to complicate her plans by pushing her into a group of girls who are testing polar equipment. After a heated outburst, she confronts her commanding officers and faces a disciplinary hearing. His subsequent, contrite admission of fault contrasts with Jo’s confession that she had been feigning good soldiering to keep Paris within reach, a ruse she finally abandons in pursuit of genuine service.

Jo ultimately leaves the Army, but not without forming a lasting friendship with Clara Schneiderman.
