In Jericho, Kansas, during the early 1910s, the town’s county attorney Dave Connors Cornel Wilde is trapped in an unhappy marriage to Belle Connors Ann Dvorak. He invites his friends, Tucker Wedge Kirk Douglas and Algeria Wedge Linda Darnell, to spend a visit with his family, hoping for a little respite from the strain at home. Algeria, however, is secretly attracted to Dave and grows frustrated that her feelings aren’t returned, setting off a chain of tensions that ripple through the circle.
As the guest list grows more intimate, Dave reconnects with an old friend, Julia Norman Anne Baxter, who has loved him since childhood. The two men and women drift into a complicated trio of emotions, and Dave finds himself drawn toward Julia. Their relationship deepens into an affair, even as guilt gnaws at both of them and Julia ultimately makes the painful choice to leave Jericho to spare everyone further heartbreak.
Meanwhile, Marjorie Ransome Colleen Townsend, a mutual friend, runs away from an oppressive situation and, in a moment of danger, accidentally kills a man who had been harassing her. She seeks help from Julia, and together with Dave, they decide to support Marjorie through the consequences of the incident. Algeria learns of Dave and Julia’s affair and deploys that knowledge to undermine Dave’s political rival, trying to ruin his chance at a Senate seat by manipulating the upcoming trial.
The disclosure of the infidelity reaches Belle, and in a shattering turn of events, she shoots Dave. Julia then takes on a central role in defending Marjorie in court, using the proceedings to defend not only Marjorie’s innocence but also the legitimacy of Dave and Julia’s relationship, while challenging Algeria’s obsessive fixation on Dave. The courtroom defense marks a pivotal moment as Marjorie is found not guilty, and the film shifts toward its resolution.
In the hospital after the shooting, Julia remains steadfast, visiting Dave and reflecting on the tangled web of loyalty, love, and ambition that has governed their actions. The story closes with a quiet sense that truth and forgiveness have become as critical as justice, leaving the characters to confront the consequences of their choices and the uncertain path forward.
