Riley is now navigating the challenging waters of adolescence as she approaches high school. Inside her mind, the emotions—Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust—have devised a new realm known as “Sense of Self.” The chance to join the Fire Hawks, a sports team, arises when the coach, Yvette Nicole Brown, spots Riley’s potential and hands out flyers for a camp tryout. Excited, Riley and her friends agree to participate, but Joy has a plan to eradicate Riley’s negative memories to ensure a flawless first impression.
However, as Riley prepares to embark on this new journey, an internal alarm sounds in her mind, signaling the onset of puberty. The emotions manage to silence it, but chaos ensues when a squad of mind workers barges in for renovations, creating disorder before being warned about new arrivals.
When Riley arrives at Hockey Camp, she faces disappointing news—her friends, Grace and Bree, will be attending different schools. Although this saddens her, she promises to make the most of her camp experience. Upon meeting her idol, Valentina Ortiz, things take an unexpected turn as five new emotions storm into her mind. Led by Anxiety, the newcomers—Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Nostalgia—bring a different dynamic that causes the old emotions to fret over losing control.
A clash of perspectives arises as Joy and Anxiety debate how Riley should conduct herself during the camp. Inside the locker room, Riley is welcomed by her new teammates but feels torn between them and her longtime friends. After overhearing negative chatter about herself, she seeks reassurance from Valentina, who encourages her.
As team selections unfold, Riley chooses Valentina over her old friends, causing further discord. In a drastic move, Anxiety decides to jettison the Sense of Self deep into Riley’s unconscious, enlisting Embarrassment to confine the original emotions in a jar. This jar ends up in a vault filled with Riley’s imaginary friends, leading to a chaotic interplay within her psyche as Anxiety crafts negative memories that distort Riley’s sense of identity.
Despite the turmoil, Riley impresses Valentina during practice, earning an invitation to spend time with her later on. Meanwhile, the old emotions make several attempts to retrieve the Sense of Self and restore positivity. Joy, along with her companions Disgust, Anger, and Fear, sets off on a wildly imaginative journey across Riley’s mind to regain lost ground.
“Keep going!” Joy urges, as the old emotions work tirelessly to counter Anxiety’s negative influence. After a whirlwind of events, Sadness returns to headquarters, stealing a phone from Ennui in a burst of determination to protect Riley from further harm.
As the critical hockey game approaches, Riley discovers that the coach believes she isn’t ready. Anxiety, sensing vulnerability, begins to spiral negative thoughts, placing her in a state of panic. In a climactic moment, Joy succeeds in persuading Anxiety to ease up, allowing Riley to relax and reconnect with her friends by apologizing for her earlier actions.
With a newfound sense of camaraderie among the emotions, they unite to help Riley thrive. Joy eventually hands over the console control back to Riley, leading her to play a remarkable game that cements her place on the Fire Hawks. As the credits roll, Riley’s parents inquire about her camping experience, to which she simply replies, “It was good.”
