George Randolph Scott (born January 23, 1898 in Orange County, Virginia) was a towering figure of classic Hollywood, renowned for his tall, lanky frame, Southern drawl, and unmistakable presence on screen. Standing six feet two inches, Scott began his public life as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army during World War I, where he honed horsemanship and firearms skills that later became hallmarks of his Western heroes. After the war he attended Georgia Tech and the University of North Carolina before turning to acting in Los Angeles, where a letter of introduction from his father to Howard Hughes earned him a small part in the 1928 film Sharp Shooters. Over the next decade he worked as an extra and bit player, even serving as dialect coach to Gary Cooper on The Virginian, while polishing his craft on stage at the Pasadena Playhouse.

In 1932 Scott signed a seven‑year contract with Paramount Pictures and quickly became a leading man in a string of Zane Grey adaptations, establishing his reputation as a reliable Western star. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s he transitioned to “A” pictures, sharing billing with legends such as Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Mae West, and Cary Grant, and demonstrating versatility in comedies, musicals, horror, and war films. By the post‑war era he had cemented his image as the stoic, morally upright cowboy, headlining classics like Abilene Town, The Doolins of Oklahoma, and the acclaimed Ranown Cycle with director Budd Boetticher (The Tall T, Ride Lonesome). His final screen appearance came in Sam Peckinpah’s Ride the High Country (1962), after which he retired at age 64, having amassed a fortune through shrewd investments in real estate, oil, and securities. A devout Episcopalian, a lifelong Republican, and a friend to stars such as Fred Astaire and Cary Grant, Scott left an indelible legacy as “the gentleman from Virginia,” remembered today through a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, a Golden Boot award, and countless Westerns that continue to define the genre.
