In 1943, during the Battle of the Atlantic, Lt. Cmdr. McClain, Randolph Scott, has just lost his ship and most of his crew to a ruthless U-boat marked by a distinctive large Iron Cross on its conning tower. The sub surfaced and machine-gunned the survivors, leaving McClain with a burning resolve to avenge his men. Offered duty ashore, he pushes for a new assignment and is allocated a fresh command while his new ship is being prepared.
He soon befriends Joyce Cartwright, Ella Raines, whose brother Dick, an officer, was killed under McClain’s command.
McClain’s new Flower-class corvette is christened HMCS Donnacona, and a crew of 65, including officer Paul Cartwright, James Brown — Joyce’s younger brother — is assigned to the ship. Setting out as an escort to a convoy bound for England, the Donnacona comes upon a gruesome lifeboat filled with dead sailors, a stark reminder of the lethal reach of the enemy.
In a raging ocean storm, the convoy is scattered, and 300 miles from the Irish coast McClain locates other stranded ships. The tanker Egyptian Star relays that a submarine may be shadowing them. The small group is targeted by Luftwaffe bombers, driven off by a Fleet Air Arm Hawker Hurricane fighter launched from one of the escort ships, while the submarines below remain a persistent threat. When the Egyptian Star is torpedoed and sunk, McClain responds with depth charges, sinking a U-boat.
Another U-boat surfaces and in a furious running battle badly damages the Donnacona. The enemy submarine is damaged by deck gun fire from the corvette, and McClain attempts a ram; as the sub begins to dive, depth charges finish it off. As it breaks up, McClain realizes it is the same boat that had previously machine-gunned his former crew.
The corvette, along with six surviving merchant ships, limps to safety in Ireland. Before it anchors, McClain is asked to steer the Donnacona past the other ships so that its brave crew may be saluted for their courage and resilience.
