Cmdr. Richard Bolton, James Caan, and a small group of Gauntlet’s survivors swim ashore after their failed attack on the German battleship Lindendorf. After a formal review clears Bolton of any wrongdoing, he is tapped to lead a new, highly classified project: a flotilla of experimental X-class submarines. The mission is bold and dangerous: train swift, covert crews to sink Lindendorf while the battleship sits hidden away in a Norwegian fjord. Bolton faces the challenge of turning a disparate team into a precision unit, all while keeping their activities under wraps from outsiders and the glare of German aircraft.
