Born on 8 October 1881 in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, he first cut his teeth in theatre, operating the Oscar O'Shea Players repertory company in Ottawa before moving to Chicago to manage his own stock company. His early experience in live performance honed his comic timing, a skill that later made him a familiar face in more than one hundred films between 1937 and 1953. O'Shea’s breakthrough on screen came with Captains Courageous (1937), where his portrayal of Captain Walt Cushman showcased his ability to blend authority with warmth, a trait that would define many of his subsequent roles as judges, sheriffs, and paternal figures.
