Spoilers ahead
Kit Madden, Claudette Colbert, is a successful author on a journey to Los Angeles to supervise the film adaptation of her bestseller Here is Tomorrow. The project was supposed to star Cary Grant as the Army Air Forces pilot Mark Winston, but Grant withdrew, and the producer now wants an unknown actor to play Winston opposite a famous actress. On the train to Hollywood, Kit encounters two Marine pilots, captain Rusty Thomas, [John Wayne], and first lieutenant Dink Watson, [Don DeFore], and she instantly regards Rusty as the best choice to bring Winston to life. Yet he is dismissive of her book, arguing that it reads like a political allegory, and he jokes that even Grant wouldn’t turn down the leading lady’s advances for 400 pages.
