Just Write 1997

Harold McMurphy, Jeremy Piven, is a single, 30-year-old Hollywood-obsessed tour bus driver in Beverly Hills who works for his father’s struggling tour company. He dreams of finding a perfect woman who will love him for who he is, despite his father’s insistence that he lower his standards.

One day, two tourists ask where they can see Hollywood stars, and Harold sends them to a chic Hollywood cafe where his best friend Danny, Jeffrey D. Sams, tends bar. While there, Harold overhears a man telling a woman that he is a writer represented by Arthur Blake, Wallace Shawn. He then spots Amanda Clark, Sherilyn Fenn, arguing with her agent Sidney Stone, JoBeth Williams. Amanda greets Harold warmly and asks for his feedback on a screenplay she’s shooting in.

Danny nudges him to pursue Amanda, even though she has a movie-star boyfriend, Rich Adams, Costas Mandylor. Harold meets Amanda again and quickly sees the same problems in the script that she does. To prove his point, he accompanies her to a party filled with stars and power players so they can confront Sidney with Harold’s candid take.

At the party, Sidney dismisses them, and Amanda discovers Rich with another woman. The setback foils Harold’s budding romance, while Rich and Sidney scramble to minimize the embarrassment. Around this time, Harold’s father tries to set him up with a flamboyant psychic named Lulu, Yeardley Smith.

Harold escapes Lulu’s attention and takes Amanda on a date to a local fair. She reveals that she has arranged for Harold to rewrite the screenplay, and she hints that Sidney will call Arthur Blake the next day to seal the deal and set the pay. Harold, still hiding the truth about himself, struggles to come clean.

That night, Harold sneaks into Arthur Blake’s office and explains the situation. Arthur Blake tells him to “just write.”

Back home, Harold tries to tell Amanda the truth but cannot. She learns that he has been lying and drives away, while Harold returns to his bus essentially believing his writing dream is over. Meanwhile, his father realizes the misunderstanding and heads to Amanda’s home to clear the air.

Amanda, curious and drawn to Harold, begins digging for information and finds him at the bar where they first met. She confronts him again about his obsession and the mix-up. After a tense moment, she decides to give him a chance. She loves the idea of the script, save for one detail: she wants to know if he has ever truly been in love.

Eventually, Harold recalibrates, writes, and returns to the tour route; as Rich arrives with flowers to celebrate his intended reconciliation, Harold races to Amanda’s house and arrives just as her doubts fade. Amanda, moved by his honesty, learns that the script is a reflection of love rather than cunning, and they share a kiss aboard the tour bus, serenaded by applause from the customers.
