Griff Barnett, born Manley Griffith on November 12, 1884 in the small town of Blue Ridge, Texas, began his performance career long before the silver screen beckoned. After moving to the Midwest, he joined the Mack‑Hil­ard stock theater company in Wichita, Kansas, where he honed his craft alongside traveling troupes that toured the heartland. His early stage work extended into the bustling Chicago theater scene, giving him a solid foundation in classic repertory and character work. By the late 1930s Barnett transitioned to Hollywood, quickly becoming a reliable supporting actor whose dignified presence made him a frequent choice for doctors, lawyers, and other authority figures. Over the next two decades he appeared in more than a hundred productions, ranging from serials such as The Lone Ranger to prestige pictures like To Each His Own (1946) and Duel in the Sun (1946). His steady, unpretentious style earned him the reputation of a consummate professional who could bring credibility to even the smallest roles. In addition to his extensive filmography, Barnett gained a modest following through radio, portraying the affable Rexall family druggist on The Phil Harris‑Alice Faye Show during the late 1940s and early 1950s.
