After the Daltons are wiped out at Coffeyville, a late‑arriving Bill Doolin escapes the raid but murders a man, becoming a wanted outlaw. He leads the Doolin gang, then abandons it to assume a new identity and try a respectable life. When former comrades resurface, his past is exposed and he is forced back onto the outlaw trail, pursued by lawmen.
