Charles Kemper (September 6, 1900 – May 12, 1950) was an American character actor whose career spanned both the stage and the silver screen, leaving an indelible mark on mid‑twentieth‑century cinema. Born in the small town of Hennessey, Oklahoma, Kemper grew up in a period when the American frontier was rapidly giving way to urbanization, an environment that later informed his earthy, everyman screen presence. He began his professional life as a stage actor, gaining a reputation for his heavy‑set physique and comic timing, which made him a natural fit for the vaudeville‑style productions popular in the 1920s. By the late 1920s he transitioned to film work in New York, appearing in short comedies at Astoria Studios, where his ability to play timid, nervous characters echoed the legacy of silent‑film star Lloyd Hamilton. In 1937 Kemper signed with Educational Pictures, where he was promoted as a leading comic and became a frequent foil for the emerging dialect comedian Danny Kaye. Although the studio shuttered in mid‑1938, the experience sharpened Kemper’s timing and broadened his network, paving the way for his eventual migration to Hollywood. Relocating to Los Angeles in 1945, he entered the golden age of film noir as a reliable character actor, delivering nuanced supporting performances in notable titles such as The Southerner, Scarlet Street, Gallant Journey, and The Shocking Miss Pilgrim. His portrayal of Pop Daley in the 1951 noir classic On Dangerous Ground is often cited as a testament to his ability to blend gruff exterior with unexpected tenderness, making it his final cinematic contribution before his untimely death. Kemper’s life was cut short at the age of 49 when a car accident in Burbank, California claimed his life on May 12, 1950. He was interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, leaving behind a legacy of over two decades of consistent work that helped define the supporting‑actor archetype of his era.
