In 1867, a bank is robbed by a gang led by James “Stretch” Dawson, [Gregory Peck], and chased by soldiers, forcing a brutal retreat across the blistering salt flats of Death Valley. After a grueling journey under a merciless sun, the outlaws stagger into Yellow Sky, a ghost town with a single, stubborn pulse: two residents who carry the town’s fragile quiet—Mike, a tough young woman living with her gold-prospector grandfather. [Anne Baxter] and [James Barton] play these two survivors, and the moment the gang crosses paths with them, a wary tension threads its way through the dusty streets. Stretch is drawn to Mike, and as the men try to regroup at a spring, a keen-eyed gambler named Dude, [Richard Widmark], begins to nose around the town and the gang’s fragile morale.

Dude’s snooping feeds a plan that stretches beyond mere looting. He suggests that Grandpa is weaponizing a secret stash of gold, though Stretch remains coolly unconvinced by the tale of hidden wealth. The next day, Mike and Grandpa retreat to the hills, while the rest of the gang regroups. A volatile clash erupts between Stretch and Dude over who truly leads the band, but Mike’s quick shot during the confrontation briefly interrupts the dispute. When Grandpa is struck in the leg by a ricochet, Mike makes a last-ditch choice and surrenders, hoping to protect her elder companion from further harm.

Back at the house, Grandpa lands a shrewd proposal: agree to split the gold, estimated at around fifty thousand dollars, rather than trust fate or a full-on siege. The plan is delicate, and it is here that the town’s dark undercurrents surface. At the spring, Lengthy, [John Russell], grabs Mike and forces himself on her, fracturing the uneasy balance of power within the group. The following day brings a new threat: a large band of Apaches appears while the gang is digging for their mine’s hard-won gold. Grandpa reveals that he convinced his Apache friends to return to the reservation and that he said nothing about the gang’s activities. In a gesture of gratitude for the old man’s discretion, Stretch pledges to share the gold with his men—but Dude has already corrupted their loyalties, pressing them to turn against Stretch and seize all the spoils for themselves.

Dude’s treachery erupts into violence as he draws his gun and fires at Stretch. A scramble erupts among the rocks as the gang and Stretch engage in a brutal shootout, while Mike arrives to lend a steadying hand and helps Stretch stumble back toward the safety of Mike’s home. The gang, now terrified of being caught in a life of constant threat, surrounds the house, determined to force a final reckoning.

The gunfight that follows is chaotic and loud, and the illusion of safety shatters as the gang believes Stretch has fallen. Dude fires at Lengthy, missing him, and Bull Run falls to a fatal shot from Dude. In the wake of the chaos, Walrus, [Charles Kemper], and Half Pint, [Harry Morgan], step in to back Stretch, taking on the odds with grit and resolve. Stretch charges after Dude and Lengthy into Yellow Sky, leading to a deadly three-sided showdown inside the town’s saloon. The scene crackles with tension as shots ring out and a crowd’s fear and adrenaline surge.

When the dust clears, Mike discovers the bodies of Dude and Lengthy in the saloon, while Stretch lies unconscious but alive. The aftermath is a quiet triumph: Stretch recovers, and he, Walrus, and Half Pint—now wearing Dude’s clothes—return the stolen money to the bank. With the score settled and the gold returned, they ride out of Yellow Sky together, joined by Mike and Grandpa, their cautious alliance finally giving way to a fragile, hard-won peace.
