The Rip delivers a competent but uneven thriller that lands in the middle of the critical spectrum. Positive notes highlight its occasional tension, strong lead chemistry, and moments of effective action, while recurring criticisms focus on a muddled climax, formulaic plot beats, and inconsistent visual execution. The film offers enough entertainment for a casual viewing but lacks the cohesion and distinctiveness to stand out, resulting in a modest overall impression.
The Movie Echo Score Breakdown for The Rip
Art & Craft
In terms of art and craft, the film shows flashes of competent direction and energetic action set-pieces, especially in its early sections. However, reviewers note uneven editing, poorly filmed sequences, and a finale that feels disjointed, suggesting a lack of consistent visual polish. Overall, the technical execution is serviceable but not consistently strong.
Character & Emotion
When assessing character and emotion, the chemistry between the two leads receives consistent praise, and their performances are described as sincere and grounded. Nonetheless, some critics find the supporting roles underdeveloped and the character motivations vague, leading to an uneven emotional resonance. The acting therefore registers as moderately effective overall.
Story & Flow
Regarding story and flow, the narrative offers an engaging premise and a tense mid‑section that keeps viewers invested. Yet many reviewers cite a bloated structure, a predictable formula, and an anticlimactic conclusion that weakens overall coherence. The plot thus balances moments of solid pacing with noticeable flaws in execution.
Sensory Experience
In the sensory experience domain, the film’s soundtrack and sound design receive little specific commendation, while visual style is criticized for inconsistent cinematography and occasional poor framing. The sensory elements are functional but lack a distinctive or memorable quality, resulting in an average score for this aspect.
Rewatch Factor
Evaluating rewatch factor, the movie provides sufficient entertainment for a single viewing, especially for fans of the lead duo. However, its formulaic nature, mixed ending, and forgettable sensory elements diminish its lasting appeal, leading most reviewers to doubt they would seek a second screening.

When Captain Jackie Velez (Lina Esco) of the Miami-Dade Police Department is murdered, the city watches the fate of her elite Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT) with growing suspicion of a crooked-cop crew preying on drug houses. In the wake of her death, her second-in-command, Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Matt Damon), pushes his squad to a dangerous edge as he follows a tip about a hidden stash in a quiet Hialeah house. He leads a team that includes Det Sergeant JD Byrne (Ben Affleck), Mike Ro, Numa Baptiste, and Lolo Salazar on a high-stakes search for illicit money, all while the clock ticks and the pressure mounts.
Inside that unremarkable house, the team uncovers an astonishing twenty million dollars in cartel cash, tucked away in the attic. The find is explosive for two reasons: the sheer amount is staggering, and the team realizes that seizing it could ignite a city-wide backlash. Dumars, already skirting the edge of procedure, refuses to alert higher command and confiscates the group’s phones to keep the operation off the books. The team’s uneasy mood deepens after a tense encounter with two local Hialeah officers, and Ro covertly uses a burner phone, sensing that something far bigger is at play.
Desi Molina, the homeowner’s granddaughter, explains that she was told to offer a cut if the stash was found, adding a personal hue to the encounter. Dumars grows more suspicious when he learns she was once a police informant, muddying the lines between informant history and criminal activity. As ominous calls mushroom around the house, demanding the detectives leave, Byrne confronts Dumars about the original tip and learns that Dumars won’t disclose what he knows. Fearing a planned heist, Byrne reaches out to authorities and cautions that Dumars may be tied to Velez’s death.
The neighborhood around the house empties, but the cartel’s shadow remains. Desi warns Ro that she heard Dumars press Baptiste and Salazar to assist in robbing the stash, and the power to the house is cut just as a heavy volley of gunfire erupts. Salazar is wounded in the exchange, while Dumars and Ro hold their ground and attempt to counter the assault. Byrne arrives with a cartel lookout from a neighboring home, who relays a chilling warning from his boss: the cartel is willing to abandon the money, but Velez’s fate might have been sealed by someone on her own team. The confrontation intensifies as Byrne turns on Dumars, Ro loses his burner phone in the scuffle, and the house bursts into flame as Nix and his team arrive on the scene.
With Baptiste and Desi left behind, the remaining detectives join Nix in a tense armored-vehicle extraction of the money. The truth surfaces as Dumars confesses that Velez sent the original tip, planning to use the house as bait for the crooked crew. He had orchestrated an elaborate ruse, making everyone believe he was stealing the money himself. When the mysterious calls reference the exact amount Dumars told Ro, it becomes clear that Ro is in league with the crew—including the very officers in Hialeah Nix had warned about. The calls and gunfire reveal that Nix and his men orchestrated the threats and shooting, while Ro set the fire as a distraction.
In the climactic pursuit, Nix opens fire and his driver falls, leaving Ro and Dumars wounded and the momentum shifting toward the authorities. Nix finally confesses that he and Ro ambushed Velez, but Byrne had activated a deeper plan, cornering the crew. As the dust settles, Ro is pursued and arrested by Dumars, and Nix dies in a subsequent car chase. The stolen cash is swapped with phone books hoarded by Desi’s grandmother, and the detectives turn in the real money, a move that leaves Desi grateful with a substantial share for her cooperation.
In the quiet dawn that follows, on a beach memory of Captain Velez, Dumars and Byrne watch the sun rise, honoring her memory and contemplating the price of truth, loyalty, and the thin line between justice and corruption.
