Randolph Scott plays Major Ransome Callicut, an undercover agent traveling west by stagecoach. The trip is interrupted when the bandit Vic Sutro tries to rob the coach; Anthony Caruso as Sutro is quickly captured, and Callicut hands him over to Philip Carey as Capt. Roy Giles upon arrival in California. Callicut’s presence sets off a broader confrontation between law and lawlessness that will test loyalties and nerve along the dusty paths westward.
Patrice Wymore plays Lora Roberts, a schoolteacher on her way to marry Giles, and she becomes entangled in the schemes of Sen. Mark Sheldon, portrayed by Roy Roberts. Lora discovers that Giles is seeing Lina Romay as Chona Degnon, a glamorous nightclub singer whose stage glow masks a darker undercurrents beneath the city’s glittering nightlife.
The heart of the criminal operation centers on a sprawling nightclub and gambling house run by Buckley, with Douglas Fowley in the manager’s seat. The venue hosts Chona Degnon’s sultry performances, drawing a crowd that Samuels the mastermind can exploit. The atmosphere of deceit thickens as the club serves as a front for more insidious plans.
In a tense moment that exposes the danger hiding beneath the party lights, Alan Hale Jr. as Cpl. Olaf Swenson trips through a floor into the basement, uncovering a stash of illegal guns and gunpowder. The discovery reveals that the criminals are not merely roping California into social upheaval; they are siphoning power toward a larger scheme that could destabilize the region itself.
The criminals publicly frame their operation as an attempt to turn Southern California into a slave state, but the real motive runs deeper: cornering water rights and laying claim to undiscovered oil. The web of greed is intensified when Sheldon murders Bram Creegan, played by Morris Ankrum, a rival senator, and then fakes his own death to muddy the trail.
Sheldon’s reach grows as he kidnaps Lora, tightening the noose around Callicut’s mission and the fragile equilibrium in the area. Lora realizes that Callicut is a government agent, and she tries to enlist help from Chona Degnon—Lina Romay once more—in a bid to avert catastrophe and salvage a chance for Giles to prove his trust.
The plot twists toward a grim finale as Sheldon decisively kills Chona before she can betray him, but Callicut closes in on the mastermind, bringing him to justice. In the aftermath, Lora’s gratitude is sealed with a quiet, grateful kiss for Callicut, sealing the bond forged through danger, deception, and a shared commitment to truth.
