Set in the 1880s Kansas frontier, three Everett men strive to run a ranch: Cole Everett Art Hindle, his pacifist brother Dutch Everett Reiner Schöne, and their cousin Matt Everett Anthony Addabbo. Cole and Dutch favor a tranquil, steady life, while Matt idolizes Billy the Kid and spends his days honing his gunfighting skills.
Their steady ambitions collide with Deke Turner George Kennedy, a ruthless cattle baron who already controls the local bank and has the sheriff on his payroll, all aimed at forcing the Everett ranch off the land. A quarrel over a woman with one of Turner’s men ends in Matt’s self-defense killing, and Turner presses to frame it as murder. A $500 bounty is posted, and Matt must kill another man in a shoot-out to avoid capture. He is eventually caught and hauled back by train to Kansas to be hanged.
Hearing the news, Cole and Dutch vow to free Matt, staging a bold breakout. The trio escapes custody and instantly becomes wanted outlaws. In freeing Matt they unintentionally allow another outlaw to slip away, who then invites them to join his gang. With few alternatives, they accept, intending to strike back at Turner by raiding his holdings across the state. But the gang proves to be far more brutal than they anticipated, and the Pinkerton agency is hired to track them down.
