Mike Mazurki was a Ukrainian‑American character actor and professional wrestler whose towering 6 ft 5 in (196 cm) frame and gravelly, croaking voice made him an instantly recognizable presence on screen. Born Markiian Yulianovych Mazurkevych on 1907‑12‑25 in the village of Kupczyńce (then part of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, Austria‑Hungary, now Ukraine), he grew up in a region marked by political upheaval before emigrating to the United States where he attended the LaSalle Institute in Troy, New York. He excelled in athletics at Manhattan College, playing both football and basketball, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1930, followed by a law degree from Fordham Law School. Although he qualified as an attorney, he found the earnings from professional wrestling to be ten times greater than a legal career could offer, prompting him to enter the ring and later serve as a bodyguard for Mae West. His wrestling background, combined with his imposing physique, led to a natural transition into Hollywood where Josef von Sternberg gave him a bit part in The Shanghai Gesture (1941). From there, Mazurke built a prolific film career, appearing in over 140 movies, often typecast as the hulking thug, gangly henchman, or slow‑witted brute in classic noirs such as Murder, My Sweet (1944) where he portrayed the murderous Moose Malloy, and the iconic Dick Tracy (1945) as the knife‑wielding Splitface. He also delivered memorable performances as “The Strangler” in Night and the City (1950) and as a comic henchman in Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot (1959). Beyond the silver screen, Mazurke was a regular guest on many popular television series, including The Untouchables, Gilligan’s Island, The Munsters, and Bonanza, showcasing his versatility in both drama and comedy. He co‑founded the Cauliflower Alley Club in 1965 and served as its first president, championing the welfare of fellow wrestlers and actors. His later years saw him appear in the Rod Stewart music video “Infatuation” (1984) and secure his final film role as Don Taglianeti in Mob Boss (1990), released just two months before his death on 1990‑12‑09 in Glendale, California.
