Mike Davis is a seasoned hunting guide who stumbles upon a hidden cache of diamonds deep in a remote mining area in South West Africa. His discovery sets off a dangerous chain of events as he is soon seized by the mine’s police, and his resolve is tested when he refuses to disclose the location of the diamonds, even under torture at the hands of Paul Vogel, the stern security chief of the diamond company. After a period away from the region, he returns with the unshakable belief that the diamonds remain buried at the original site, keeping his loyalties and plans close to his chest.

The mining company’s owner, Arthur “Fred” Martingale, watches the situation from a distance and tries to outsmart Davis with guile rather than force. He believes that cunning can reveal the secret without bloodshed, and to that end he hires a striking courtesan, Suzanne Renaud, to charm Davis and coax the truth from him. Suzanne is drawn to the rugged allure of Davis, even as Vogel’s attraction to her creates a fragile triangle of desire and ambition. The power dynamics at play—between wealth, coercion, and affection—add a tense undercurrent to every encounter.

As the plot thickens, Davis conceives a plan for an illegal entry into the diamond site, intending to seize the gems and slip away to Portuguese Angola. The plan hinges on timing, nerve, and a willingness to gamble with his own freedom, all while the others maneuver to tilt the outcome in their favor. Davis eventually locates the diamonds, but Martingale delivers a stark ultimatum: reveal the diamonds or see Suzanne threatened with harm. In a pivotal moment, Davis yields the diamonds and chooses a different path, deciding to leave the country with Suzanne. The journey reveals a transformation he hadn’t anticipated: he discovers that his love for Suzanne outweighs the lure of wealth, and the idea of a life with her becomes more precious than the fortune the diamonds promised.
