The Briggs family comes together for the first time in over twenty years to attend Marina’s funeral and to hear the reading of her will. For Tyler, Marina’s son, the gathering is a tense reminder of a fractured past and a present that never fully fits into the family’s uneasy orbit. Marina had left Tyler everything she had, but in a quiet act of defiance he breaks with convention: he takes the White 1972 Ford LTD and a photo album, and he leaves the house and a modest sum—$6,000—to his father Gus. With that, Tyler heads toward the coast, seeking the birthplace of Marina and the distance a solitary life can offer from the tangled web of the family he was supposed to belong to.

On the coast, Tyler begins a slow rebuilding of his life. He finds a kind of belonging among Jack and his circle of friends—Max, Andy, and Trip—and he ends up living as a handyman at the Higgins’ beach house. The days feel almost normal for a while: a steady job, a place to sleep, and the blossoming romance with Jack’s sister, Sandy. The relationship brings a sense of sweetness and purpose that Tyler hadn’t realized he was missing. A new community, new loyalties, and the simple joy of being part of something that resembles a family give him a fragile sense of hope. Alongside him, his new friends offer camaraderie and resilience, the kind that can steady a person through the rough edges of life by the shore.

But the fragile peace is shattered when [Gus], his volatile father, along with his hard-drinking friends—Teddy, Baker, and Hardy—arrive in town. The quartet brings a reckless storm of booze, drugs, and bravado that unsettles the quiet summer Tyler has built. The tension escalates quickly: the four men press into the Higgins house where Sandy is located, and their presence quickly becomes a grave threat. They attempt to assault Sandy, a brutal reminder of the dangers that lurk beneath the surface of this new, fragile life Tyler has started to mend. The attack is brutal and intended to intimidate, to reassert control over a life that Tyler has chosen to leave behind.

In response, Jack—who has his own sense of justice and loyalty—rallies friends to confront the intruders. A brutal confrontation on the beach leaves Baker and Hardy beaten and bloodied, the results of a fight that spills over into the night. The conflict doesn’t end there: Baker and Hardy kidnap and torture Max, one of Tyler’s new friends, and they also seize Jack and Andy. The men are forced to walk the plank on a dock that runs out into the Pacific, a grim setup that compounds the sense of danger and lawlessness that has overtaken the beach town. A furious struggle follows, and the four fall into the water. The two brothers, who are intoxicated and unable to swim, drown in the cold sea while the others survive the chaos.

The aftermath drives a deeper fracture into the family. [Gus] is furious at the deaths of his sons and goes on a relentless search for Jack. The confrontation returns to the motel where Gus tracks down Jack and Sandy, and a desperate struggle ends with Gus shooting Jack in the leg. It’s a brutal moment that clarifies the costs of the family’s long history of violence and resentment. Tyler intervenes, making a stubborn stand: killing Jack won’t repair the past or restore what was lost; it would only destroy the life he’s begun to build for himself and for Sandy. The two of them walk away from the chaos, leaving behind the violent legacy that pursued them to the coast.

In the end, the story closes on a note of cautious resolution. Sandy and Tyler decide to pursue a quieter, more peaceful life together, away from the wreckage of the family’s old conflicts. Jack’s fate, and Gus’s, are left unresolved, their futures hanging in the balance as the sea continues to shape the coast where their lives briefly intersected. The film leaves the door open on what comes next for the surviving characters, but it makes clear that a choice toward healing and distance from the worst of the past is possible—even if it comes with a price.
