On a moonlit night, a young boy is sent to bed by his mother, and he moves through a dark, quiet house, climbing the long, narrow stairs with a growing sense of unease. Each creak of the floorboards and slam of a door seems to announce the presence of something unseen, until he reaches the safety of his bedroom. As he drifts toward sleep, a pale face appears in the crescent Moon outside his window, an image that will later echo in the events inside the house.
At the bottom of the stairs, a fearsome figure—the Sandman, a bird-like creature with a looming, predatory presence—emerges and begins to climb toward the boy. The monster’s approach is felt through the house as doors slam and floorboards groan, signaling the threat that is coming. In a panic, the boy accidentally knocks over his oil lamp, revealing to the Sandman precisely which room he occupies. He hides beneath the covers, hoping to escape the intruder’s notice, while his mother enters, retrieves the broken lamp, and settles him back into bed, attempting to restore a sense of safety.
Yet the night’s terror does not end with the mother’s comforting touch. The Sandman returns to the room, making noises and troubling the boy as he tries to sleep. When the boy finally opens his eyes again, the monster blows sand into them and seizes something from him before slipping away through the bedroom window. The threat has claimed a payment, and the Sandman retreats to his moonlit nest.
Back on the Moon, the Sandman’s hungry children await, and the narrative reveals the terrible exchange that has taken place. The Sandman removes the boy’s eyes and feeds his young with them, a stark image that underscores the creature’s primal hunger and the grave cost of sleep and fear.
In the post-credits scene, the eyeless boy wanders through space and memory, bumping into unseen people and still waving at them. He then looks straight at the camera, and the sequence hints that there are others like him—also looking toward the camera—creating an unsettling sense that the boy’s fate is part of a larger, eerie pattern.
