Marcello Mastroianni (1924‑09‑26 – 1996‑12‑19) was an Italian actor whose career spanned more than five decades, making him one of the most iconic male performers of the 20th‑century. Born in the small village of Fontana Liri in the Lazio province, he grew up in Turin and Rome, the son of carpenter Ottone Mastroianni and Ida Irolle. He first appeared on screen at the age of fourteen in the uncredited role of an extra in Marionette (1939) and continued to take minor parts throughout the 1940s. It was not until the late‑1950s that he achieved critical and commercial breakthrough with the caper comedy Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958) and, shortly after, with Federico Fellini’s landmark film La Dolce Vita (1960), where he portrayed a disillusioned tabloid columnist wandering Rome’s decadent nightlife. The collaboration with Fellini continued in the meta‑cinematic masterpiece 8½ (1963), cementing his reputation as a symbol of modern existential ennui. Alongside Sophia Loren, with whom he shared eleven films between 1954 and 1994, Mastroianni displayed a rare versatility, excelling in both dramatic and comedic roles and becoming a beloved figure in Italian and international cinema. His filmography includes Divorce Italian Style, A Special Day, Dark Eyes, and The Pizza Triangle, among many others, reflecting a breadth that covered romance, satire, and avant‑garde experiments.
