Chronicle of Poor Lovers 1954

In Florence, spring 1925, the young typographer Mario Parigi [Gabriele Tinti] moves to the Santa Croce district, taking up residence in Via del Corno to be closer to his beloved Bianca [Eva Vanicek]. The pair find themselves drawn into the daily rhythm of a tight-knit, working-class world, a microcosm that persists even as the shadow of Fascism begins to creep across the city. The street becomes a stage where small acts of courage, quiet disagreements, and shared routines shape a community that clings to normalcy while the politics of the era press in from every side, turning everyday life into a delicate balancing act between personal affection and collective pressure.

The building’s residents form a dense weave of personalities and loyalties. The landlord Corrado, a farrier known as Maciste [Adolfo Consolini], is an outspoken anti-fascist and former Ardito del Popolo, someone who embodies the neighborhood’s instinct to resist intimidation. His friend Ugo [Marcello Mastroianni], a street vendor of fruit and entertainment, shares these anti-fascist leanings and often acts as a voice of reason among the crowd. Across the corridor, a pair of confident fascists make their presence felt: the accountant Carlino Bencini [Bruno Berellini], a Rijeka-born legionary, and his roommate and colleague Osvaldo, who keep the street’s power dynamics taut and uneasy. Other neighbors—Staderini the cobbler, Ristori the hotelier who shelters a handful of prostitutes, including Elisa [Cosetta Greco], the mistress of Nanni the admonished—also contribute to the social mosaic. Bianca’s friend Clara [Irene Cefaro] moves through the same cramped spaces, while Alfredo Campolmi [Giuliano Montaldo], the grocery store owner and Milena’s husband, adds another layer of commerce and ambition to the street’s drama.

At the heart of this network is Gesuina, “La Signora” [Anna Maria Ferrero], a quiet but influential maid who sits in bed surrounded by the day-to-day pulse of the block. She keeps the neighborhood in the loop through the loans she administers, weaving a web of obligations that binds neighbors to one another in ways that are as intimate as they are precarious.

The street’s uneasy equilibrium shatters when Alfredo, newly married and determined to expand his business, refuses to pay dues to the local Fascist Party. The consequences are swift and brutal: a violent beating leaves him battered and unable to run the grocery, forcing him into the sanatorium and upending the plans he and Milena had been building. With Alfredo sidelined, the Via del Corno feels the weight of political retribution and social pressure more acutely, revealing how quickly a neighborhood can pivot from ordinary coexistence to a tense, polarized landscape. The incident tests loyalties, reshapes alliances, and exposes how deeply the community’s fabric is interwoven with the era’s political currents, leaving a lasting impression on everyone’s daily lives.
