What's After the Movie
Paul Michael Hurst (born 25 September 1974 in Sheffield, England) is a seasoned English football manager and former left‑back whose career spans over three decades of the beautiful game. He began his professional playing journey with Rotherham United in 1993, where he amassed 438 league appearances and scored 13 goals, becoming a stalwart of the club's defence for fifteen seasons. A brief loan spell at Burton Albion in 2008 marked the end of his playing days, after which he seamlessly transitioned into management, initially serving as joint manager with former teammate Rob Scott at Ilkeston Town. Their partnership yielded a rapid promotion to the Conference North, showcasing Hurst’s tactical acumen and leadership qualities. Subsequent joint appointments at Boston United produced another promotion and a collection of lower‑league trophies, cementing his reputation as a promotion‑specialist. In 2011 Hurst took charge of Grimsby Town, guiding the Mariners to the National League play‑off triumph in 2016 and later restoring them to the Football League in 2022 after a dramatic extra‑time run. His managerial résumé also includes successful spells at Shrewsbury Town, where he lifted the club from the relegation zone, reached the EFL Trophy final and secured a top‑three finish in League One, as well as a brief but turbulent tenure at Ipswich Town. Known for his meticulous preparation, strong communication skills, and a UEFA ‘A’ Coaching Licence, Hurst remains a respected figure in English football, balancing his professional commitments with a family life alongside his wife Melanie and their two children.
