He began his professional playing journey with Rotherham United in 1993, where he amassed 438 league appearances and scored 13 goals, becoming a stalwart of the club's defence for fifteen seasons. A brief loan spell at Burton Albion in 2008 marked the end of his playing days, after which he seamlessly transitioned into management, initially serving as joint manager with former teammate Rob Scott at Ilkeston Town. Their partnership yielded a rapid promotion to the Conference North, showcasing Hurst’s tactical acumen and leadership qualities. Subsequent joint appointments at Boston United produced another promotion and a collection of lower‑league trophies, cementing his reputation as a promotion‑specialist.
