The Sun Shines Bright 1953

In post-Reconstruction United States, Ashby Corwin [John Russell] returns to his native Kentucky by steamboat and is instantly drawn to Lucy Lee Lake [Arleen Whelan], the ward of a local doctor, her beauty catching him off guard as the town hums with old resentments and new tensions.

In the courthouse, Judge Billy Priest [Charles Winninger] sits at the center of a crowded reelection campaign while dispensing a string of cases. He even helps Uncle Plez Woodford [Ernest Whitman] find a job for his idle nephew, U. S. Grant Woodford, all while navigating whispers about Lucy’s heritage that the town is eager to gossip about, a rumor Fairfield the General denies.

On the street, Buck Ramsey [Grant Withers] hurls insults at Lucy about her lineage, sparking a whip fight with Ashby that breaks out in the open until the judge arrives to restore order and calm the crowds.

Lucy learns that her real mother is a prostitute who has recently returned to town, a revelation that unsettles the community’s fragile sense of propriety. Meanwhile, the daughter of Rufe Ramseur [Trevor Bardette] is assaulted, and young Woodford is blamed and arrested, stoking racial tensions and drawing a dangerous lynch mob into the town’s streets.

Judge Priest steps into the fray, facing the mob at the jail and delivering an eloquent and brilliant argument that cools tempers and steers the crowd away from violence. Later, Lucy’s mother points to Buck as the attacker, shifting the accusation and the town’s suspicions.

Election day arrives, and those who feared the mob’s wrath realize Priest has saved them from themselves, producing a tie with Horace K. Maydew [Milburn Stone]. It’s revealed that Priest hasn’t yet cast a ballot himself, so he wins reelection by a single vote: his own.
